It has been more than a century since I-lan Hospital was founded. In the past, we had glorious achievement, especially when we were in a lack of medical resources in Taiwan—we were loaded with the duty to take care of our friends in I-lan area. We were named “Big Hospital,” which represents the trust and appreciation from our friends. However, as the time went by, the Hospital failed to catch up with the time. In the most miserable age, we even fell into the predicament of less than a hundred clinical registration per day and less than ten percent of hospitalization rate. Even so, being the only large-sized hospital in the Hsi-pei area, we still shoulder the health and security of friends in I-lan; such duty is our tradition, and destiny, too.

Local executives and representatives toiled in order to meet up the local friends need and expectation for medication. Fortunately, the I-lan Hospital earned the chance of revival. January 19th, 2001, I came to I-lan Hospital, leading a team of medication from the Taipei Veteran’s General Hospital (TVGH). The team raised up the medication level of this area, and turned a new leaf for I-lan Hospital.

The first problem we had to focus on was that the critically ill patients could not be properly treated in the crucial moment. Therefore, we extended the emergency room, and modernize the intensive care unit and operation rooms. Thanks to the intensive training on urgent treatment, our emergency service had a six-time’s growth, and the intensive care beds has multiplied from four to twenty-four. We indeed salvaged many precious lives in this area. Besides meeting up with the need of crucial medical treatment, we are enthusiastically expanding our arms on the subjects we are currently weak at: gastroenterology, cardiology, tumor study, asthma study, allergy and immunity study, rheumatology, etc. In the future, we will try our best to raise our knowledge level on these fields to the standard of the medical research center. In education part, our hospital now serves as a local medical school with outstanding teachers and ample teaching resources. Our hospital can provide a chance to practice for both medical interns and students from nursing schools of I-lan. Moreover, we can do more medical research in this community. Cooperating with the genetic research from TVGH medical team, we are going to examine the relationship between specific local epidemics and genetics. I-lan Hospital will not only provide high-quality medical services, but serves as the center for medical research and education in I-lan.

It has been more than two years since I-lan Hospital was trusteed to TVGH. After our endless effort, local friends have recollected their confidence and trust on us. Their trust comes from our insistence that medication qualities should go hand in hand with the achievement of the medical research center, and the fact that all our full-time doctors have received training from the medical research center; our new residents also receive the training from TVRH. We try to provide our patients with the high-quality medical service the same as that of the medical center, in terms of the medical support system on nursing, medicine supply and examination. In the past two years, though we were challenged by the change of health insurance system, the cuts of government subsidy, and even the threat from SARS, we kept on growing. Now, our hospital has more than four hundred and fifty staff members at work, or more than five hundred if the part-time doctors and human resources from other hospitals. Our hospitals provide on-going education to our staff when the hospital’s inner structure is growing, not metion our continuing effort to modernize and extend the information system and medical facilities, for which we have invested more than two hundred million NT dollars. The effort from the last two years has proven our hospital to posses the most advanced facilities, the same found in the medical research center. Our application this year to extend bed numbers has also received the admission from the Department of Health, meaning that we are going to extend our emergency beds to 351 ones at the end of 2004. At that time, I-lan Hospital will be a grand hospital containing six hundred beds, which is more than enough to satisfy the local need for critically illed patients. Thanks to all our effort, we had taken over more than half of the SARS patients reported in the I-lan area, and we were capable of taking care of other SARS cases transformed to our hospital. These patients all left the hospital healthily.

Recently,we have refined our vision and viewpoint; our central ideal is that the quality of medical services should be guaranteed regardless of the size and level of the hospital. Based on our current hospital size, we hope we will provide services the same of that from the medical research center, and we will regain our past glory to look after all our local friends’ health. Therefore, the goal of “high quality, highly trusted” is the new vision now heading us forward. As for the viewpoint part, we understand that medical service is based on love and mercy—every patient is our family. We will also promise our staff a caring and inspiring working environment, so that all of us can serve the public with passion and sincerity. We are also looking for higher medication quality. “Mercy, passion, involvement, ambition” are taken as our motto, and they will remembered by all our staff and friends in I-lan. Thank you.
